We met the heroes last time, now meet the villain of the novel. The devil prince Y’Thraak.
Y’Thraak was banished eons ago to the Gray Wastes, which is where gods go to die, if not destroyed outright by a rival. Often the god is a minor one whose worship has dwindled to nothing. The Gray Wastes are essentially the nightmare for even the greatest of gods. The devil prince was betrayed by the Thirteen, the leaders of the abyssal realm known as the Pit, for seeking the means to divinity. The gods in turn banished him to the one place where he could never acquire the knowledge.
In the present, a foolish mage seeking the path to power accidentally frees Y’Thraak from his prison. The devil prince seeks revenge on the gods, and will exact it by subjugating the world they are supposed to protect. For the gods cannot act directly in the affairs of mortals. Y’Thraak knows he has nothing to fear from them directly. And he is confident for two reasons.
One, the magic that once defeated him and his minions belonged to the various orders of paladins. The goddess of magic herself removed the magic and the secret of joining that order ages ago. Thus no matter what mortal champion rises, they won’t be able to hurt him.
Two, he has learned what the gods feared he would. How to ascend to divinity. He seeks to be the first devil god in the pantheon. And the gods know he won’t stop there.
