Draen’s Arcanum – The Goddess of Magic

Need I incinerate another student? No? Good. Let us proceed with today’s lesson. It is one that resonates deeply within me, as it should all of you regardless of where you are in your magical training. Today we discuss Kor’Tuni, the goddess of magic.

Kor’Tuni is a greater goddess, with only Aeruss, god of the Sun and her husband, and Neissithaar, the goddess of Fate and her sister, as her equals in the pantheon. Neissithaar and Kor’Tuniare the last of the dragon titans, the original gods of this world. After the Great War, Neissithaar retreated to her domain and continued to function as Keeper of the Cosmic Balance.

Kor’Tuni was originally the patron of dragons, and still maintains that portfolio. When Aragos, the former god of magic sacrificed himself to repair the damage to reality that foolish mortals unleashed by altering time, Kor’Tuni seized the opportunity to absorb the spark of the dying god and replace him. Incidentally her first act as goddess of magic was to ban all magic altogether. Over time she released her hold, allowing wizards and sorcerers to return, and priests to once again use divine magic.

Kor’Tuni controls all magic, from the lowliest apprentice, to divine agents of the gods, all the way to the gods themselves. If she so chose, and she has, even the gods would be robbed of their magical powers. She takes a no-nonsense attitude to magic, and actively promotes the Zer’Kai, the secretive order of mage killers. Renegades that frequently abuse the laws of magic, can expect a visit from one them. Only one is ever necessary.

While on the surface it would seem that Kor’Tuni is a jealous and controlling goddess, it would foolish to make that assessment. To begin, she is a dragon, hoarding is in her blood as it is in the blood of the dragons of the world. After banning magic, Kor’Tuni discovered she could no longer create new magic. It is the ultimate burden of the god, or goddess of magic. The truth is that Kor’Tuni loves magic of all kinds, and encourages us to experiment, manipulate and create new magic. With the death of Aragos, many arcane and divine traditions were lost. Kor’Tuni cannot access them without altering the fabric of time. However mortals have no such restrictions and can, through experimentation create new spells, or rediscover old ones. It is these spells she craves. In this way, the goddess of magic’s spellbook is ever growing.

If you wish a path to power, beginning with offering Kor’Tuni new or lost magic would be a good start. Not angering me would be another.

Now then, on to the schools of magic…
