Earlier I spoke of the savage and powerful elemental dragons. For the most part, they are what one would consider evil. They are devious, tyrannical and ruthlessly territorial. Fire dragons in particular love to conquer everything in their domain. Which is pretty much what they can see.
By contrast, the celestial dragons are what one would consider good. They are clever, tactical, and just as territorial. It’s important to understand that good and evil are hard to quantify with dragons. Dragons are dragons. They don’t think they are superior to all mortal races. They know they are. A moon dragon is just as prone to hoarding treasure as fire dragons, and just as quick to defend it. Only difference is a moon dragon might warn you of the dangers of trespassing, whereas a fiery breath is the only warning a fire dragon will give you.
The celestial dragons tend to be smaller than their more feral counterparts. However, they are all blessed by the goddess of dragons, who happens to also be the goddess of magic. This blessing allows celestial dragons to cast spells. It was the celestial dragons who taught the elves how to wield the various magics.
There are four types of celestial dragons: moon, sun, star, and astral dragons.
- Moon dragons – Also known as shifter dragons, in their natural form have silver or platinum colored scales. They are natural shapeshifters and spend a great deal of time in other forms learning about the world around them. They are most even tempered of all the dragons and the ones most found hiding among the mortal races. They are also the dragons with the most variety in spell casting. While the majority of known moon dragons are arcane casters, a few have been known to cast divine spells. I have known one that is an archdruid. A young moondragon known as Darkclaw has become a warlock, trading his soul to a demonlord. A moon dragon’s breath weapon is a concentrated beam of moonlight. It strikes with an intense coldness that chills the soul from its victims. Moon dragons have a particular hatred for demons of all kinds. Due to their social proclivities, most half-dragons are the child of a moon dragon.
- Sun dragons – Also known as aura dragons, these dragons scales are golden in color. As they age the scales get brighter. The oldest sun dragons scales can shine with the brightness of the sun even in the darkest of places. A sun dragon can turn down the brightness, but in combat it serves to hinder the enemies sight. Sun dragons are arrogant to a fault, but they have the magical might to back it up. All sun dragons are expert arcane casters. Having centuries to perfect their craft, an ancient sun dragon is a rival to any archmage on the planet. Adding the power of their breath, a devastating blast of solar energy, and only a fool would pick a fight with one. Sun dragons detest undead, and can often be found leading the charge should an undead horde be revealed.
- Star dragons – Also known as glitter dragons, though never to their snout, are reclusive dragons that actually make their lairs on the clouds in the sky. Using a form of draconic magic, the lair cannot even be accessed except by certain times of the day or year. Star dragons are introspective and tend to be loners. They can spend centuries making a decision, but once made, rarely will their minds change. Star dragons skin looks like the night sky made flesh. A wyrmling’s scales are bluish black, with only a small pattern of stars on its back. It has been said this mirrors the stars on the night of its birth. On an Ancient star dragon, it’s as if the night sky itself is imbedded in the scales. The stars will move as you watch. It truly is a marvelous sight. A star dragon breaths a dazzling spray of stars that both burns and cuts those foolish enough to be in its path. Most star dragons devote themselves to the goddess of dragons, who grants them the ability to cast divine spells.
- Astral dragon – These rarely seen dragons are believed to be an evolution of all dragons once they have absorbed enough magical energy. The dragons become so massive they cannot exist in the material world, so they shift themselves to the astral plane. Here they continue to consume magical energy. Astral dragons traverse all dimensions consuming anything they find. If brought to the material plane, an astral dragon will immediate seek out the largest concentration of magic and attempt to devour it. Eventually astral dragons come into contact with each other, with violent results. Understandably, this keeps their numbers low. It is believed that if they grow strong enough, the goddess of magic herself brings them to her domain where she drains them of their magic, and sets them free once more to consume and collect. Astral dragons resemble ghostly dragons, with colors depending on the type of energy they last, or most often, consume. A dragon stuffed with necromantic energy may be sickly green, while one that feasted on evocation energy may crackle with lightning of various colors. Astral dragons can also cast spells across all spectrums. While they rarely communicate, the spells they cast are not limited to class.
Hunting dragons is a foolish errand. While the treasure can be massive, it is rarely worth the cost. Death is inevitable. For dragons are the apex of the food chain. And as I said before, dragons know this to be fact.
Always take time to enjoy some music.
